Weird Yarns

Knitted digestive system by Matie Trewe

Over the last year I’ve learn to knit, and now I’m learning to crochet. In other words, I’m turning into a yarn-head.

When I first started, I thought the world of yarn was all about things to wear (hats, sweaters, scarfs), and cozies. But I’ve discovered a whole world of weird knits and crochets done by people that obviously have way too much time on their hands, and too much creativity.

Some people have made this into an art form. jackrabbit.etsy.com has created object such as TV sets, Atari consoles, bicycles, gas masks and guns. Patricia Waller has renditions of a fire extinguisher, dentures, cacti, arm and leg prosthesis, roasted chicken among many others.

I’ve found that some people have been knitting and crocheting human organs and even DNA. So far I’ve stumbled upon:

Another trend seems to knit or crochet technology:

And let’s not forget food. I even found a very long list in KnittingPatternCentral and CrochetPatternCentral (all include pattern):

This is just the tip of the iceberg. For example, check out knit_purr’s miniature knits. She uses pins for needles!

I’m still quite content with my hats and scarves, but that digestive system pattern is starting to see more doable…

Bravo, cousin. You have stumbled on to a great new art form and will be the next Picasso.
