Defining your goals

The truth is that not all businesses need to have an Internet presence. Having a web site won’t solve all your problems, but it can acheive certain goals.
If you have not defined your goals, how are you going to achieve them? You know your business better than anybody, so it’s up to you to guide your site’s development. You and your developer need to establish clear goals, the more specific the better.
Here are some sample goals:
- Create a new sales channel for foreign markets
- Have an Internet presence so existing clients can view new products
- Improve my business’ image
- Reduce brochure printing costs
- Attract new clients
- Overtake the competition
- Provide better customer service
Compare the list above with the following list of reasons uncertain clients give when asked why they want a web site developed:
- My cousin/neighbor/competitor has a site, so I want one too
- Internet is the future, and I don’t want to stay behind
- I don’t know, you tell me… you are the expert
Nice..
Well, there is a certain amount of truth in saying that if you DON’T have a website, people begin to struggle to take you seriously these days. Although, I have encountered some clients who honestly say they don’t think the website is going to do anything for them, but they have to have one to be seen as professional. Yet, not another reason for having an internet site, that’s for sure. There may be some truth to it, but there’s certainly no strategy.
