One of the biggest obstacles to create an effective web page is having an unclear idea of what the finished site should accomplish. If you don’t know what you are building, how can you build it well?
- Brochure sites: this type of site allows you to share basic information about your business, such as what services and products you offer, answers to frequently asked questions, location, contact information, samples, etc. Their main goal is to promote your business, but not necessarily sell directly online.
- Account management sites: these sites allow clients to access their account information. For example, online banking sites allow customers to review their bank accounts, pay bills online, etc. Another example would be a site where users can check their email, access special services, etc.
- Content sites: these types of sites offer specialized information, and usually seek revenue through selling subscriptions or advertising sales. Examples of such sites are search engines, online newspapers, online magazines, etc.
- E-commerce sites: through this kind of site people can buy products directly. Consumers can be either individuals or other businesses.
- Hybrid sites: a lot of sites are a combination of some or all of the above. They offer information about their business, allow you to manage your account, plus they sell products online.
In future, I’ll cover how to further define your business’ goals in order to make the most of your web site.
